On 4 october 2009, during the feast of Saint Francis of Assisi, our parish (Saint-François-d’Assise) was declared a “Green Church”. It is situated in Montreal (in the Mercier-Est sector). The decision was made regarding the four following points:
- A project of urban agriculture was developped in the parking lot at the back of the church, last summer. This project was possible thanks to a neighborhood committee (Solidarité Mercier-Est) which worked with a larger project from McGill University ;
- For many years, the secondhand clothes shop recycles clothes to sell them at a low price for people in need ;
- A particular effort to promote composting ;
- Major works of restauration of the church and presbytery (including the « Maison des familles de Mercier-Est ») during the last two years in order to improve energy efficiency (roof and windows).
Thanks for your initiative … which helps us stimulate initiatives !
